Aftercare
Aftercare instructions
Tattoo aftercare
The first few days and weeks after receiving a new tattoo are crucial. It is recommended that you follow all aftercare instructions given by your artist to avoid any risks of infection or improper healing. In the event of an infection or skin condition, it is suggested that you consult with both your artist and your primary physician.
Cleaning and Drying: You can remove your bandaging 1 hour after getting your tattoo under warm water. Never leave the bandaging on longer than 24 hours.
ALWAYS wash your hands before touching your fresh tattoo and do not allow others to touch your fresh tattoo without first washing their hands.
Use warm water and unscented antibacterial soap to gently wash off the excess plasma, ink and blood off your tattoo with your hands only. Do not scrub your fresh tattoo. Lightly pat the tattoo dry with a clean paper towel and put a thin layer of aftercare ointment (A&D, Hustle Butter or all natural ink butter) If you choose to apply additional saniderm, make sure you repeat these steps once the bandage begins to fill with plasma and excess ink.
It is recommended to wash and moisturize the tattoo at least 4 times daily for the first two weeks after receiving a fresh tattoo, and additional times if necessary.
Basic Information: During your first few nights, it is normal for your tattoo to secrete excess pigment and/or blood. Fresh tattoos can stain sheets/clothes. Wear clean, loose, soft clothing. During the healing process, it is normal for your tattoo to feel itchy, it is also normal for pieces of skin containing pigment to flake off especially during cleaning. Do not attempt to intentionally remove any scabs or skin flakes, it can damage the skin and cause scarring and missing pigmentation. Seriously, DO NOT PICK OR SCRATCH. Proper healing of the tattoo is your responsibility.
Never use alcohol based products on your fresh tattoo. Do not use Neosporin, Vaseline, petroleum or any other products without first consulting with your artist.
DO NOT let fresh tattoos come into contact with pet hair or saliva, bathroom towels, tight clothing or anything that could harbor bacteria.
With a fresh tattoo it is recommended no swimming, no hot tubs, no saunas, no tanning of any kind, no beaches, no lakes, no submerging and soaking the tattoo in any standing water, or exposing it to any other bacteria infested places until fully healed.
Do not put sunscreen on a fresh tattoo. Do not let your friend Joe Schmoe smack your tattoo. Literally pretend this is your child and guard it from any and all possible dangerous or bacteria ridden scenarios.
It can take a tattoo 10 to 21 days to fully heal. Fresh tattoos will be red, swollen and sore for the first few days. Then as time goes, they should lighten and dry out to which thin flakey scabs will form. Lastly, do not listen to your friends, mom or great uncle bob on how to care for your tattoo. Follow these instructions.
You can ice, and elevate your tattoo to reduce swelling/inflammation. Signs of infection may include increased pain, excessive pain, excessive redness, heat/tenderness, blisters, excessive weeping, rash, fever or drainage. If you’re experiencing these symptoms please consult a physician. Please don't do anything weird to your new tattoo.
Piercing aftercare
Wash your hands thoroughly before touching or cleaning your new piercing for any reason. Use a saline rinse as needed during healing. For certain placements, it may be easier to apply using clean gauze saturated with saline solution. A brief rinse afterwards will remove any residue. If your piercing suggests using soap, gently lather around the piercing and rinse as needed. Avoid using harsh soaps or any soaps with dyes, fragrances or triclosan. Rinse thoroughly to remove all soap from piercing, it is not necessary to rotate jewelry. Dry by gently patting your piercing with a clean, disposable paper products because cloth towels can harbor bacteria and get snagged on the piercing causing irritation and possible infection.
What is Normal?
• Initially: some bleeding, localized swelling, tenderness, or bruising. • During healing: some discoloration, itching, secretion of a whitish-yellow fluid (not pus) that will form some crust on the jewelry. The tissue may tighten around the jewelry as it heals. • Once healed: the jewelry may not move freely in the piercing; do not force it. If you fail to include cleaning your piercing as part of your daily hygiene routine, normal but smelly bodily secretions may accumulate. • A piercing may seem healed before the healing process is complete. This is because tissue heals from the outside in, and although it feels fine, the interior remains fragile. Be patient, and keep cleaning throughout the entire healing period.
• Even healed piercings can shrink or close in minutes after having been there for years! This varies from person to person; if you like your piercing, keep jewelry in -do not leave it empty.
What To Do
• Wash your hands prior to touching the piercing; leave it alone except when cleaning. During healing, it is not necessary to rotate your jewelry. • Stay healthy; the healthier your lifestyle, the easier it will be for your piercing to heal. Get enough sleep and eat a nutritious diet. Exercise during healing is fine; listen to your body. • Make sure your bedding is washed and changed regularly. Wear clean, comfortable, breathable clothing that protects your piercing while you are sleeping • Showers tend to be safer than taking baths, as bathtubs can harbor bacteria. If you bathe in a tub, clean it well before each use and rinse off your piercing when you get out.
What To Avoid
• Avoid moving jewelry in an unhealed piercing, or picking away dried discharge with your fingers. • Avoid cleaning with Betadine®, Hibiciens®, alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, Dial® or other soaps containing triclosan, as these can damage cells. • Avoid ointments as they prevent necessary air circulation. • Avoid Bactine®, pierced ear care solutions and other products containing Benzalkonium Chloride (BZK). These can be irritating and are not intended for long term wound care. • Avoid over-cleaning. This can delay your healing and irritate your piercing. • Avoid undue trauma such as friction from clothing, excessive motion of the area, playing with the jewelry, and vigorous cleaning. These activities can cause the formation of unsightly and uncomfortable scar tissue, migration, prolonged healing, and other complications. • Avoid all oral contact, rough play, and contact with others' bodily fluids on or near your piercing during healing. • Avoid stress and recreational drug use, including excessive caffeine, nicotine, and alcohol. • Avoid submerging the piercing in unhygenic bodies of water such as lakes, pools, hot tubs, etc. Or, protect your piercing using a waterproof wound-sealant bandage. These are available at most drugstores. • Avoid all beauty and personal care products on or around the piercing including cosmetics, lotions, and sprays, etc. • Don't hang charms or any object from your jewelry until the piercing is fully healed. In the event of suspected infections, rejections, or unidentifiable reactions seek the help of a licensed healthcare professional.
